FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Downtown Vision Launches Coworking Initiative for Downtown Jacksonville

Jacksonville, FL (February 10, 2011) – Downtown Vision, Inc. (DVI), the Downtown Improvement District, has formed a Downtown Coworking Committee to evaluate the need for and interest in establishing a coworking space in Downtown Jacksonville.

Coworking involves shared office space but the work is independent and can be any combination of professionals and industries.  Coworkers come together based on the mutual need for physical work space and desire for an office environment.  Advances in technology have helped the coworking trend grow and reduced the dependency on the traditional office environment.  Many that work from home or in the local coffee shop want to escape the isolation and crave the synergy of working in a shared environment with others.

“Creative ideas like coworking have the potential, like Off the Grid, to address Downtown’s greatest need and asset, vacant space,” said Terry Lorince, executive director, Downtown Vision.  “During Off the Grid our arts initiative with the Cultural Council, we received calls from many other types of self-employed professionals interested in workspace Downtown.”

The committee has explored various models in other cities including Shreveport, Orlando and Palm Coast.  Many cities have at least one coworking space and, to determine what will work best in Downtown Jacksonville, surveys are being conducted to gauge the interest of both workers and property owners.

Anyone interested in coworking space may complete the online survey here.

Property owners in the Downtown Improvement District interested in participating may contact Terry Lorince at Downtown Vision, Inc., 634-0303.

Members of the committee include members from The Cultural Council of Greater Jacksonville, the Jacksonville Economic Development Commission, Jacksonville Civic Council, Florida Theatre, the Jacksonville Chamber of Commerce, Perdue Office Interiors and coworking advocates Gabjia Mclauchlan, Roland Udenze, and Elton Rivas.
